Stop the Procrastination!

4 reasons why we put things off and how to overcome them.

By Ashley Kay Falletta

How many times have you said to yourself (while idly scrolling through social media):

  • "I'll do it later."
  • "I'm just going to put this over here for now."
  • "My husband/partner/kid/parent/assistant will get to that tomorrow."

"A body at rest will stay at rest until compelled to do otherwise." Little did we know in school that Isaac Newton's First Law of Motion could apply to our everyday life. Many of us get sucked onto the procrastination hamster-wheel, even though we know it will be detrimental to us later, personally, and professionally. But the question is...why? Here are four reasons why we procrastinate, as well as simple solutions that will help you navigate the habit for good.

Reason: "Where do I start?"
Solution: Recognize emotions.

Since we tend to recoil from negative feelings, we mask "overwhelm" with the words, "I don't know where to begin." It would be best if you acknowledged that you feel distraught and deal with that feeling first. An excellent way to do this is to ask a friend to talk about the situation with you, so they can give an outside opinion that will clear your mind and help you realize that you know the next steps. Even if you don't, the release of negative emotions will give you more confidence to figure it out.

Reason: The need to be perfect.
Solution: Separate results from worth.

Perfectionism gets things done but can also leave us stressed out and in fear that we will fail. As a result, we put things off until the last minute, leaving us scrambling and feeling less-than-great about the final product. There is a difference between results and YOU. Be confident in the person you are, and realize that you are so much more than the task at hand.

Reason: It doesn't seem important.
Solution: Take a step back.

As humans, we are wired to respond to what is right in front of us first. But if you step back to take a look at the bigger picture, the puzzle pieces will start to fall into place. Find what is important to you, and think about how this task will help you achieve this goal.

Reason: We just "don't wanna!"
Solution: Find the root - and counterbalance.

To solve this problem, explore the root: Why are you putting off tasks? Is it so you can indulge in play? According to a study in the European Journal of Personality, some people simply work better under pressure. If this is you, compensate your procrastination by working harder and smarter so you can get your task done - and still have time for fun!

If you want to stop procrastinating, it's essential not only to recognize the root of the problem but also to know yourself inside and out. Become a fly on the wall and look at the bigger picture. Only then will you stop the procrastination and start living!
